Hi. I was wondering if I could swap RAM cards straight from one CPU to another. My CPU has 2 256MB cards, and it can only take 2. I have a bunch of 512MB RAM cards from another CPU laying around. I was wondering if I could just swap them out. Thanks.

To determine what you have see if they match with these two (as I guess you have sdram or ddr ram),

sdram http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SDRAM

ddr http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR_SDRAM

They cannot physically fit in each other's sockets but you learn something.

Yes, if they are the same type (sdram or ddr), you can swap them no problem, just check how much ram your motherborad supports. Some have a 768 MiB limit.

Hey thanks for the reply. Yes, I have SDRAM (sorry forgot to mention that). Um, this may be obvious if I open up my CPU, but how do I know what my CPU's mobo limit is?

Also, will I notice any difference from changing from 2 256MB to 2 512 MB? Thanks and sorry for the newbie Q's.

Jose

By trying. No harmful effects.

You try 512+512, doesn't work? 512+256.

Depends on the OS you have, but it'll respond faster and apps will be loaded faster.

Use the system scanner at Crucial.com to find out how much RAM your motherboard will support:
