Hello!

I have a question belonging to some newer server processors:
Are CPUs like Xeon MP (NetBurst) or Opteron 800/8000 series processors able to run on single CPU systems?

What's the difference between the Opteron 100, 200 and the 800 series processors? Of course, except the fact that the 100/200 series Opteron processors can only run on systems with up to 1/2 processors. It seems to me, that their processor cores are identical.

Best regards, Xaar.

For Opteron, the answer is that yes they will run. For example, I run an Opteron 850 in my single socket motherboard.

The difference between Opteron 100, 200, and 800 is the number of coherent hypertransport (HT) links.
Each Opteron 100 CPU can link to 0 other CPU, and has 0 coherent HT
Each Opteron 200 CPU can llink to 1 other CPU, and has 1 coherent HT
Each Opteron 800 CPU can link to 2 other CPU, and has 3 coherent HT (but only uses 2).

Same for Xeons DP / MP. They can work alone on a single socket MB.

They just need to be supported by the motherboard?

I've seen m/b supporting almost any cpu and others just limited to the ones tested.

Another thing are cpu that exceed the total supported wattage (125W+), like forst phenoms.
