Hi. I was wondering the differences between Pentium 4 processors. If the middle part is different, does that mean I can't swap them for eachother? Below is a picture of 2.8 P4 (bottom) and a 3.0 P4 (top). Can I swap the 2.8 for the 3.0?

Thanks,
Jose

Those capacitors vary from a mdoel to another, even in the same family.
As long as the cpu model you want to swap is supported by the motherboard, those capacitors have nothing to do, ever.

If you have a 2.8ghz and a 2.9ghz cpus -same core, same family, just mhz difference, capacitors have a different position, but that doesn't affect in any way the support of m/b.

Hope it's clear enough.

Forgot to give you an answer:

yes, you can swap them safely (if p4 3.0ghz is supported by your motherboard - refer to your manual or manufacturer site).

Hey thanks. Now another question. How do I know if my processor supports Hyper-threading? What is hyper-threading anyway?

http:// en. wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper_threading (remove spaces)

Basically it makes believe the OS that you have a second core, but physically you have just one.

This is not a true second core, in fact it boosts some tasks a little. Not all and sometimes really low % more.......

To know if you motherboard supports HT you go to the manufacturers site and see if it's mentioned either in the presentation on by downloading the manual.

Come on buddy, do some gymnastics Wink

And look at youtube, sometimes ppl post video on how-to for pc stuff.

This site provides research of sspec by model, it's on the first page.

Toy around and see if you can find what you want.
