I have home-built computer that I inherited-- It uses MSI KT4V motherboard and AMD XP 2500+ CPU (512 Meg Memory and XP Home OS)

The unit was given to me because the MSI PC Alert 4 (monitor) kept saying it was overheating (& would shut down to protect the unit)--- Today I discovered that the PC Alert 4 has user configurable settings (sliders) and I wondered if it had been set up correctly.

I discovered CPU World and a page that gave the working range for that processor as 0-85 degrees C.
Here is the link I found:
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K7/AMD-Athlon%20XP%202500+%20-%20AXDA2500DKV4D.html

The PC Alert 4 was shutting down the unit at approximately 65-7- degrees C (lots of dust in PC fan- which when removed, I now get readings of 55degrees C when idle-- and don't seem to rise above 60 degrees C. (System temp reads at 33 degrees C.)

Your thoughts would be appreciated- ( I am thinking of using this for a Linux box and leaving it on for long periods of time- so temperature is a key factor).

My apologies if this is the wrong category- and thank you for taking hte time to read this
