Can u guys n girls please pass on ur best tricks for removing heatsinks off chips n NOT damage Crying or Very sad the chip in the process.

I mite need to remove some to properly identify chips

thx 4 that Very Happy i'll check them out
i did a search in the forums before i posted n the only references were all about boiling them Shocked
was thinking there mite b some less drastic measures to try first Very Happy

I've used a hot air blower on the heatsink, which melts the glue/transfer compound, then using a small screwriver you should be able to lift the heatsink off with no damage to the chip at all. I just did a 486 on the weekend this way and it worked perfectly

If they're EPOXIED on, forget it!
I had to use a baby sledge hammer and cold chisel on some and its hard not to damage or nick the chip.
If there is Epoxy left on the chip, scraping carefully with a sharp wood-chisel or single edged Razor blade can remove it with hard work! Embarassed
