|
|
Hello to all!
I have Dell 500 notebook (Service tag 2DTSX3J) with Intel Celeron M 550 2,0 GHz processor.
And I want to upgrade my notebook processor to one of Intel Dual-Core Mobile (Intel Pentium Dual-Core Mobile, Intel Core Duo Mobile, Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile) processors.
Which of Intel Dual-Core processors is supported by motherboard and BIOS of my notebook?
Which maximal processor FSB frequency my notebook support?
Thanks a lot for your answers!
P.S. Sorry for my english - it's not my native language. |

Hi,
you should try to contact Dell support to get desired data.
Most notebooks (not only Dell ones) have a very poor CPU upgradeability.
Newer CPUs produce more heat than the older ones and each new generation of mobile CPUs uses a different socket! |

Hi!
Thank for your answer!
Of course, I will contact Dell support for this information, but I don't belive what I'll get it from him.
Motherboard of my notebook is based on Mobile Intel Express GM 965 + Intel ICH8M. On Intel site I read what this configuration support processors with FSB 533, 667 and 800 MHz. Also I know what my current processor have Micro-FCPGA package.
I want to choose my feature processor with know of this information.
Hope, information about motherboard of my notebook will be helpfull to you. |

The CPU-World forum isn't a helpdesk. Unfortunately we have the same information sources as you.
If the manufacturer doesn't want to provide information you need - nobody from us will get it either.
Try to google using the name of your chipset. Perhaps you will find a list of CPUs supported by the motherboards of given type.
But only Dell will be able to tell you if a CPU is supported by DELL-BIOS and the notebook's cooling system will be able to handle the heat.
Furthermore I found this piece of information:
| http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium_M/index.html wrote: | Pentium M microprocessors are packaged in 479-ball micro FC-BGA and 478-pin micro FC-PGA packages. This micro FC-PGA package is not compatible with any other 478-pin packages that Intel used with mobile Pentium III-M, Mobile Pentium 4/4-M, Core Duo/Solo and mobile Core 2 Duo processors.

Apparently the fastest CPU you can use with your motherboard is Pentium M 2.26 GHz (micro FC-PGA package).
Perhaps these links will help you a bit.

Description for the Celeron M family is a bit outdated - there are now socket M and socket P Celeron Ms. Celeron M 550 is a socket P processor with TDP 27 or 31 Watt, and besides Celeron M CPUs I don't see any other socket P processors with TDP lower than 35 Watt. Core 2 Duo mobile processors T7100, T7300, T7500, T7700, T7800, T8100, T8300, T9300 and T9500 may work if they are supported by your motherboard and BIOS, and if the fan/heatsink will be able to handle higher thermal design power. T7100 - T7700 should be supported by the chipset:

there are a few good one here, they are all quite affordable and easy to find.
Pentium Dual-Core : T2370, T2390
Core 2 Duo : T5450, T5550, T5750
T2390 is my pick coz it's cheap but according to PassMark, it performs about the same as T5550. |
