| Hey, is there any Pentium 4 socket 478 running @2,8GHz (Northwood core) with HT (hyper-threading) technology? Does that even exist? I don't think so... maybe the only HT model of this core is available on the 3,06GHz... |

wow...i'm in shock... that should not be....
Hey, since you guys are so expert on this, would you help me list all the Pentium 4 socket 478 my motherboard supports? It has been a mess, and I am so confused and afraid because i'm planning on buying a new processor on the internet and i can't send it back in case it does not work... my motherboard is a ECS L4S5MG 651+ (REV6.0) - not sure whether processors with FSB800 will work(i currently have a P4 2,4B - Northwood/512K/533 and my DDR400 memory chips will only work @DDR333 with this mobo)...

Well, according to this list, my mobo supports everything but FSB800... it even supports a ultra-duper rare 3,06GHz Northwood core(HT/512K/800)... problem is finding one for sail.... :p maybe REV6.0 motherboards supports FSB800? i have tested a Prescott 3,0GHz(HT/1MB/800) and no success.......
There's something weird about my machine... it's an AcerPower ST model... there's a stick showing Intel Inside Pentium 4 HT... but from what i know, there's no HT processor in it... it bundled a 2,4GHzB Northwood processor, which doesn't have hyper-threading..... |

My Dell has old Northwood 2.8 GHz 130nm 800 FSB, 512kb L2, SSE2 with Hyperthreading. Excellent list of all CPUs - HTT or not by Intel chipset number at - ark dot intel dot com .
I only saw HTT for 2.8GHz up. But also saw used CPUs on ebay under $10.
$30 is current bid for 48 P-4's of various speeds. |

Theoretically there are 3 keypoints in order for motherboard to support certain cpu:
#1 - BUCK PWM CONTROLLER
#2 - CLOCK GENERATOR
#3 - BIOS (CPUID)
There are some other factors that may affect that, but these three - are key ones.

Your motherboard supports a 400 / 533 fsb socket 478 processor only.
There is a 3.06ghz ( as mentioned above ) that supports HT and is a 533 FSB socket 478. Good luck finding one though !!!!
The lowest socket 478 P4 with HT is a 2.8hgz P4, but this uses an 800 fsb. Placing this in your computer would run ( if it posts ) at 1862 ghz ( 1.8-1.9ghz ). This processor has a multiplier of 14 : 14 x 200 = 2800.
Pentium 4's are quad pumped : 400fsb = 100 x 4, 533fsb = 133 x 4, 800 = 200 x 4
The lowest HT P4 is a 2.4 running at 533 fsb but that is socket LGA 775
The easiest chip to get hold of for that motherboard is a P4 2.8 with either 512k or 1mb cache ( the 1M runs slightly better, especially for converting music MP3's to WAV or video media AVI to MOD DVD format ).
Your motherboard supports upto 2GB of RAM ( DDR333 / PC2700 ) non ECC. If you buy DRR400 / PC3200, this will only run at DDR333 / PC2700 speeds.
The 3.0ghz or 3.06ghz are very rare and people ask quite a bit for them second hand.
The best combination of price / spec for your system would be a 2.8Ghz P4 with 1MB cache ( 533FSB ) and 2 x 512mb PC2700 ( matched pair ) running dual channel. ( if you can get 2 x 1GB for cheap, then obviously this is better ). You can get these items cheap from online auction sites.
Most basic games nowadays require 1GB + RAM with either a 2.8 or 3.0 Ghz P4.
The other limitation with your board is that it ony has a 2/4 x AGP slot. The better AGP graphics cards ( 128 / 256 bit ) use an 8xAGP. The bettter cards also have hefty power requirements ( 450 watt PSU plus is usually a must ). I suspect with that motherboard, it is probably running a standard P4 spec 200watt PSU. IF you get an 8 x AGP card, most of them will run at 4x AGP, but the power can come into play ( quite a few require a separate power plug ). The best you could hope for is about a Nvidia 6800 LE ( use RIVA tuner to unlock the extra pipelines. They are ocked a 8, but most unlock to 12 or i you are lucky the fully fledged 16vvp as per the 6800 GT ). The 6800LE has low power requirement yet still has a 256 bit interface.
If you want to play games like GTA IV, forget it and go for something modern as your system will not upgrade to even the minimum requirements. |

Believe it or not a good Wikipedia page on Pentium 4s: "List of Pentium 4 microprocessors" shows FSB, HT, socket,etc.
Best desktop 533FSB SKT-478 CPU listed is --3.06 GHz PRESCOTT -HT etc
