a Quad 2-Input NAND Gate and a ripple counter, wonder what they are using those for.

My SXL2 had these, too. And 2 small chip coolers glued on the remaining space of the chip. Don't know their function, maybe stabilizing some signals?

More then likely it is to generate a signal every so many clocks.
