Hello. I'm seeking to upgrade my ancient AMD Athlon TF-20 mobile processor, which plugs into my Acer Aspire 5517 motherboard. It's lightning fast like slugs, so I figured it was about time to move on. After a TON of research, I had my heart set on the AMD Phenom II N660. Then I realized that the new pin type of the N660 would not fit into my motherboard (via your article on S1g4 which I cannot link to :@). Now I'm back at square one. How do I get a faster processor for my poor laptop without upgrading my motherboard and subsequently everything that plugs into it? I've nearly driven myself to the point of insanity with the fruitless research. Would it just be easier to upgrade my RAM? If I did end up upgrading my RAM, how much faster would my computer be? Thanks!

Posting your specs would be a good start.
If you have 4gb of ram, the problem isn't that.
OS?

You notebook should be compatible with AMD TK-42:
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/AMD-Athlon%2064%20X2%20TK-42%20-%20AMETK42HAX5DM.html
It's clocked the same as TF-20, but it has two cores. AMD L510 (TMEL510HAX5DM) seems to be identical to TK-42, so it should also work. There are other Athlon X2 / Turion X2 processors with higher TDP, that may work in your laptop, if laptop's thermal solution can handle higher power dissipation. For example, TK-57 (AMDTK57HAX4DM) has 31W TDP against your current 15W. You can get TK-57 for $7 - $8 on eBay with free shipping. The fastest CPU, that may work, is TL-68 (TMDTL68HAX5DM).
