Why do you think it may be a 4040?
The part number 1818 normally means it is a ROM - see http://www.cpu-world.com/info/HP-parts.html for other samples with HP codes for CPUs.
I have a lot of CDIP28 chips like that (oh yeah, lets hope you are right:-)
Nevertheless, they are nice and POMs are mostly melted down. So they're rare! Just no market for them at this time. |

I was only kidding it might be a c4040 Besides, I see it's in a very similar packaging so there's a good chance it was produced in the iC4040 era, although there is no datecode(that I would understand).
Do you think it's HP? I didn't see this code anywhere on that link. |

ok, it was late and I didn't get it's a joke;-)
anyway, all those 18xx codes are HP internal part numbers. So this chip was made for HP, that's for sure. The only way of getting the company that made it will be removing the lid and search the die for a logo...
Gennadiy collects CPU part numbers on the mentioned site.
In this case 1818 just means ROM and the rest is the code for the ROM content.
eg. I have a board containing 28 of these chips all printed
1818
2078E next 2080E...
A-453C next A-368C...
Ah, I remember the link (unfortunately not my website...):
