I need advice. I have mainboard KOB KT266a FDSX with Duron 850. My brother have one waste Sempron 2000+. Can I put this Sempron in this mainboard? On producer web :

http://www.mercury-pc.com/product-detail.php?productid=63#

is:
Description - AMD K7 Mainboard with VIA KT266A Chipset Design
Processors - 462 pin Socket A supports AMD Athlon (K7) processors
* Full series of Athlon/Duron CPU including the future
Athlon processors.

Sempron is also K7 cpu. It will work? Or I need update bios first? I have primal BIOS on this MB. If is not sempron possible, what quickest Athlon XP can put there, without updating BIOS? I'm afraid , that I damage MB updating BIOS, I don't have any practice with this.
Is there anyone who can help me?

Thanks,

The sempron is socket A, so pin compatible.

If the net gave no result for a look up than just stick it in, with adequate cooling, if it starts up you'll have it but at lower speed as your board doesn't support 333 fsb (just 266), sempron's.

Bios update isn't difficult but risky if you mess up, means a dead board.
Just don't do it when all your electric stuff is working, shortages are not good.
Follow bios update as described in mercury's site.

Try it before updating the bios, then if it doesn't work try after bios update. If no joy athlon xp 2600+ @ 133 (266) fsb is the highest choice for you, but being the top upgrade it'll be costly.

Check on this site for athlon xp family.

Bye.

Don't update the BIOS because the Sempron CPU won't work and there is no BIOS for this mobo to support Sempron CPU, I had this mobo 7months with a Athlon XP 2200+ (1800MHz) and the max FSB that the mobo could achive is 300MHz (with a BIOS update you could go all the way up to 360MHz) but this with FSB overclocking and you con't rise the v core voltage, and the mobo dosn't have AGP/PCI lock so you overclock the AGP and PCI bus.
If I'm right the fastes CPU that the mobo suports without overclock is the AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 266FSB.
The Cempron would boot but @ lower speed, and you could have stability problems

I forget for my promise: let you know result. I sent mail to producer and they wrote that this board dont suports Sempron only Athlon XP 2600+. So I dont try it. I was surprised with their quick and willingnes reply.
