|
|
I recently bought a chest with the purpose of storing my collection in it, and I thought this information will be interested to other collectors. A chest I bought has 15 drawers, each drawer is 2 inch high, and the chest looks like this:
I put anti-static foam board into each drawer. All drawers can be easily removed from the chest. Here are pictures of the chest already loaded with processors:
I bought the chest at TopDeq (www.topdeq.com) approximately for $325. They also have cheaper chests with smaller number of drawers. The chest is made by Bisley (European company) so I guess it may cost less in Europe.
Thanks!

To mount LCC processors to the anti-static foam I hot-melt glued surplus PDIP chips to the back of the LCC processors. You can then plug them into the foam! The glue can later be removed without damaging the processor. I used the same trick to mount my printed labels.

Here is very cheap storage for spare chips and maybe even for collection storage:
This plastic tray is actually one wall of the plastic storage box sold by Ikea. The storage box costs $4 in Ikea, and it has 4 walls, so you get 1 plastic tray for $1! They can be stacked together, and they do not take a lot of space. I use them for spare and unsorted parts. The pink stuff under processors is a thin anti-static foam.

I am desperately looking for those drawers where you usually put your pencils inside in your office - they have drawers ~1 inch high and 1 foot wide, so they are almost perfect for putting CPUs inside. They semm to be really expensive though, I haven't found a cheap source until now.
@gshv: do you have a link to the drawers you use for your processors? We have IKEA here in germany too...

Here is a link to the storage box on US Ikea website:
http://www.ikea-usa.com/product_presentation/show.asp?productnumber=00005557&type=III&id=421,467
It's more expensive on the website, the price in our store (near Washington DC) was $3.95. Also, the storage box on the website looks a bit different from mine - maybe this is a reason why it's more expensive? I have the name of the product at home, I'll post it when I get home.

Grampa, of course those trays are not good to show off the best chips in the collection, but they're very convenient for storing spare chips and some collection chips, like Motorola 68040 (nothing to look at )
Karolo, I'm not sure if it's a good solution to put more glass shelves into the cabinet. I'm afraid it will be difficult to see chips placed close to the back of the cabinet. I may be wrong as I never tried this...

Hi,
Like you i had a lot of trouble finding a good storage box for the CPU's in my collection. I found some boxes, but they were way to expensive for me. After a while i stopped looking and then... here have a look :
It is hand made, not very good looking. But the drawers are very wide and deep. For me its ideal! There is enough space for lots more CPU's.
