They appear to be an early cache test (perhaps 512k)

Nice one. Even nicer that you open up a one of a kind chip to reveal its insides!
As far as I remember from photos of PPros, it is possible to see some differences in the cache die, between a 256 and 512 part. If possible, you might consider comparing this chip with the two different.

yah the 256k chip is rather diff, this looks closer to the pair of 512k chips used in a 1MB ppro
