Kind of a cool piece of history.

Here is an upgrade adapter socket for the 486, allowing 486s such as the AMD and Cyrix 5x86 and Intel DX4-100 to be used in old 5V systems

Still in the package

$18

I realise its gone, but do you have a pin-side photo? If the bottom is without IC's, what I like about this adapter is that it doesn't contain additional logic chips. A lot of these upgrade adapters contained PAL or GAL IC's, which I think are added to increase compatibility in some situations. Not knowing exactly what those IC's are doing bothers me. What is they are written for the Cyrix 5x86 in mind but you want to use an Am5x86, or visa-versa.

I keep staring at Table 1 and continue to have no idea what information it is trying to convey.

As for Table 2, I didn't realise the Intel DX4 could run at 2.5x the FSB. Can it?

Table 1 is saying essentially the same thing as Table 2, but based on the initial system clock (if you have a DX-25 set the jump to 2-3 for the AMD etc)

So, basically, it's a voltage regulator and a multiplier selector .. ?

Its really nice how clean it is from any IC's. I have one from Trinity Works (the Power Stacker), one from Evergreen, and one from Gainbery. They all have IC's aside from the voltage regulator. The only module I have without IC's is an Evergreen unit which contained a QFP Am5x86-133, plus caps, and a VR IC. I'm sure there are more PGA-socketed adapters like this, but I haven't run into one in person without any ICs.

It really makes me wonder how much benefit the IC's provided and if they in some cases they caused more compatibility issues rather than fixes.

I have a few of the modules pictured. They are nice in that they have a small profile, but I don't like how they placed the VRM under the CPU. It would have also been nice if there was a WB/WT jumper.

Because of heat dissipation issues, esp. when using a linear regulator?
