Hi,

I got these two unusual chips. The search with google brought nothing of value.

I found only one piece (plastic MK3886N) in a collection - http://www.cpu-museum.com/3886_e.htm
The collector describes the chip as a "8-bit microcomputer unit" and there is a small specsheet avaliable.

On the other hand this is the list of Mostek's support and peripheral chips: http://www.cpu-world.com/Support/3/38.html
The MK3881, MK3882, MK3883, MK3884, MK3885, and MK3887 are peripheral chips. The MK3886 is not listed, but it's logical to aussme that it's also a support chip.

What do you think - is the MK3886P a CPU or a support chip ?

Another question -
This Mostek MK3880P was made in Malaysia, the word "MALAYSIA" is stamped on the chip.
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Z80/L_Mostek-MK3880P-pgg.jpg

There is a word "DALLAS" on my chips. Were the chips manufactured in DALLAS ??? Confused

They seem to be quite rare. There are none listed on eBay USA and ever on USBid !
Does somebody have a MK3886P in his / her collection ?

This might be a 3886 combo chip. I have MK3886N, but not the MK3886P. I'd be interested to buy/trade one Wink

According to THIS, the MK3886 is a "Z80 COMBO" peripheral IC with on-chip timer, 256 bytes of RAM, and serial I/O all in one device. Dallas, TX is where Mostek was hq'd.

Mostek had their main operations in Carrollton, TX, which is on the outskirts on Dallas, and assembly plant in Dallas, they later (in the late 80's) moved their entire operations to DALLAS.

They also were Zilogs main fab (as Zilog was fabless to start with)

OK, the chips were made in Dallas. But Dallas TX is a part of the USA. Usually the country of manufacturig and not the city is stamped on the chip.
Any idea why "Dallas" and not "USA" is stamped ?

For example - this MK3886N was made in Philippines. http://www.cpu-museum.com/Bilder/Mostek-MK3886N_1.jpg

I don't want to open a new thread, that's why I post here Smile

I got another weird chip.
Texas Instruments TMX9909NL - made in HOUSTON.

What is it? I can't find any information about it in internet.

Let me guess - TI had a chip plant near Houston ?
Does somebody have any TI chip with "Houston" markings ?

Now I have two chips made in Dallas, one chip made in Houston and a couple of chips made in Beijing, China Very Happy

TMX9909 = TMS9909 = floppy disk controller

The "X" means it's a prototype.

I don't have any chips that say "Houston," but I have a number of ICs with US city names on them.

I found more information n MK3886. The 3886 is a peripheral chip that has 256 bytes of RAM, two timers, three interrupt channels and serial port. It doesn't have Z80 core. It did go into production. It was possible to build simple Z80 microcomputer using an oscillator, Z80 CPU, ROM and 3886 COMBO chip.

Thank you for this information.
Do you have the MK3886 datasheet?

Yes. It's in Mostek 1981 data book.
