hi to all,

i got a really great email contact. if you believe or not, from now on i am
in good email contact with Federico Faggin Smile

i have never thougt that this contact will be possible. i asked him for the
Pioneer 10 myth and about the 1701. i know the pioneer 10 myth is still
lifted, but i also want to hear his opinion.
and he told me some interesting things about the 1701.

so if one of you have a special question he is able to answer, let me know.

Awesome! Now you can nudge him everytime
you have a question! Smile
My question would be if he knows how many
ceramic 4004`s have been sold or manufactured!

Very nice Peter!

I want to know more about the problems with the hermetic seal.

What is the earliest chip with quartz window? Who made it. etc..

1701/1702 story doesn't sound right. Both them have quarz lids and are UV erasable. And suppose the x-ray story is true, what is the difference between 1601 and 1701 then?

I wonder if he is confusing the 1601 with the 1701, because as far as i knew the 1701 and the 1702 are uv erasable And both have quartz windows where as the 1601 has the metal lid on it.

Well, Mr. Nusser I guess you scored very big! Applause
And it's good to see how many people here actually know in depth about chips.

Hmmm just thought about the significance of Federico
Faggin in history of microprocessors. And.... no he
is not the pope! But he compares to Martin Luther I think,
hmm ok probably I should not smoke so much weed... icon_crazy
Anyway we guys can be happy that the designer of the first (commercial)
single chip cpu is still alive and Peter can bug him with questions now Smile
Generations of CPU-collectors after us will probably cry
not to have the opportunity to get in any contact with him!

More importantly the Z80 that he designed is STILL in production in pretty much the same form

Yes you are right, Z80 was and still is a very successful design.
But in what way would have Intel emerged WITHOUT that 4004?
Maybe no 8080 then because Intel never realized the potential
of CPUs? And then no 8086ers? Yes and then very likely
Motorola would have made it into the fabulous IBM PCs... Shocked

considering EPROMs were Intels biggest business until the mid 80s lol

The 8008 perhaps was the most important processor design Intel made (and they didnt want to make it at first), as it became the 8080, and Z80 and 8085 and x86

Hey, ask him why there is almost NO information about the 4040 available, esp. INTEL didn't mention it anytime when they made any historic information available (just remember their 15th aniversary brochure!)
Who is JOTIEL, lol
