Hi guys,

I need help in order to make the good decision. I search the web without success to know which CPU I should choose to give a new life to my old laptop :

This is my old laptop:

HP Compaq Presario R4000
AMD Mobile Athlon 64 3500+ (socket 939)
1 GB RAM DDR 2700 333 Mhz
ATI Radeon Xpress 200M

I would like to know which are the best CPU I could use in this laptop situation ?

Thank you for your consideration.

You have a notebook, right?

Then it's socket 754, not 939.

If it's a desktop, than you can go to Athlon 4800+ x2... dualcore version.

Check Wattage, maybe you'll be limited on choice by it for an upgrade.

Look in the manufacturer's site if there is a bios upgrade, if turion cpus are supported.

This is an interesting question. If you look at the notebook manual:
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00364919.pdf

it specifies AMD Mobile Athlon 64 4000, 3800, 3500, or 3200 processors. However, if you look for Mobile Athlon 64 CPUs:

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/TYPE-Mobile%20Athlon%2064.html

the 3500+ and 3800+ models are not listed, only the 3400+, 3700+, and 4000+.

The 3500+ and 3800+ are usually associated with desktop processors, so either the manual is wrong, or Compaq used desktop processors in the notebook, or AMD made a special run of "Compaq-only" notebook parts.

As dume said, check for BIOS update to see if socket 754 Turion is possible (doubtful, but maybe so); otherwise, it looks like Mobile Athlon 64 3700+, 3800+, or 4000+. Of course, no dual cores are compatible.

Yes, it is really weird about the fact that I have a 3500+ in my laptop and Compaq still not give a load of info. This is the reason why I made a mistake about the socket 939 at the begining. But 3500+ is what is still wrote when I right click My Computer to see properties.

Anyway, If you tell me that a Mobile Athlon 64 4000+ socket 754 is ok without flashing the Bios, I'll make it simple like that.

Find Thanks you to confirm.

BANG !

The COMPAQ Tech support told me there is a socket 939 in the R4000 laptop mothor board. But they cannot give me a detailed list of CPU supported.

I'm still searching the web to confirm...

Thanks if you have a cue regarding these new informations.

This one is interesting, very interesting if they are right.

Wouldn't be the first time that a helpdesk is wrong (many just read what is written).

Uhm... would you run "cpuz" program? Just google it.

Haha lol. Your right. But some other indication make me think in that way.

cgi.ebay.com.sg/HP-zv6000-Compaq-R4000-AMD-MOTHERBOARD-396870-001-/320293294630

I'll run cpuz later (I'm at work now).

Finally, Compaq R4000 laptop have socket 939

Here is cpuz info :

valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1154574

In that unusually situation, I'm still confuse about the better CPU I should use to improve performance of that old laptop. I will add 1GB of RAM too but is that enought ?

This is wierd to me.

Never heard of that kind of solution before in a notebook...
We always learn new things.

Can you try again cpuz but with orthos running, and see if the frequency goes up to 2.2 ghz?
For an upgrade you should pick any CG core revision processor (they should work with your bios), or if there is a bios upgrade, look if they give any info for any "cpu microcode update". And maybe have some other core version with another TDP on the same range as the current cpu.

Oems have strange deals with cpu manufacturers.

Yeah is really unusual. But this notebook is very thick and heavy.

Yes, it run at 2.2 with the best multiplier (x11) but not often.

Thanks for your help, it has well oriented my research. I'll look for the bios update now to see my possibilities. If there is no one I'll go simply with a CPU of the same range like 4000+ 939 with same TDP and Vcore.

There is a BIOS update for the Compaq R4000 but there is non info about supported CPU.

I think I will give up if the only better one I can use in there is the 4000+ @ 2,4GHz. It's not worth it IMO.

I would like that the Athlon 64 FX-55 or FX-57 work in it but I don't wanna buy it to make the test. ; )
