Hey guys,

I have an old computer here and I think the motherboard is broken. It has an Intel P4 531 processor & I'd hate to see it go to waste so I'm trying to figure out what motherboard I can buy that will support it.

This is the processor I believe: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium_4/Intel-Pentium%204%20531%203.0%20GHz%20-%20JM80547PG0801MM%20-%20HH80547PG0801MM%20%28BX80547PG3000EK%29.html
how do I figure out what motherboard will support it?

I was going to buy an ASUS P5G41T-M-LX, do you think that would work?

Thanks in advance guys Very Happy

-Mike

That board is pretty overkill for that P4. It should work. The CPU isn't directly on the support list, however the board should support it since the G41 chipset supports P4, the 800MHz bus is supported, other P4's are on the list, and its an LGA775 board.

Depending on how much you are paying for that board it could be a waste of money to buy for that CPU. The board supports Core 2 Duo and Quad CPUs which are much much faster than that P4 you have. Also that board uses DDR3 memory. The old P4 motherboard you have probably has DDR2 memory. Buying more memory + that board just to use an old P4 531 is probably a waste. You can get old Intel 915/945 chipset LGA775 boards on ebay for around $20 that will work just fine. You could aslo pick up a Core 2 Duo CPU to go with that board, but then you are basically replacing most of the computer.

Thanks for the quick reply Very Happy I'll search for a cheaper board when I get home. I got an A-bit SG-80 at home that I didn't even bother testing since it wasn't on the compatibility list... Although that one might not be powerful enough.
Thanks again!

The Abit SG-80 does support the P4 531. Assuming the board works and you have DDR-400 memory for it you are good to go. Very Happy
