Wondering if anyone has any tips on how to remove this! I'm not sure if it's soldered on, or if I just have to pry it off, hot air gun it off?

Thought I'd ask your opinions out there before I start chipping corners off and breaking everything by accident!

Thanx in advance.

It is soldered on. I usually heat the board up from the back until the chip falls off.

What do you use to heat it up to the proper melting temperature?

I'd prefer not to burn the house down while I give my first shot at desoldering a go...

The heat gun might work. Since I don`t have one I just use a propane torch. I just have the tip of the flame near the board and move it around to heat up the board.

I do it outside.

I don't have a heat gun either, but I do have a propane torch!
I'll give it ago here tomorrow morning before work.

What could possibly go wrong? Very Happy

You could breath harmful and toxic fumes if you try this indoors!
I do all my de-soldering outdoors for this reason. Surprised

Good call!
Fumes never even crossed my mind (being I've never done this before), and I'm not the only one in the house, outside it is.
One disaster avoided...now let's try and keep the fire thing under control Wink

Success!

Good thing I did a few trial runs and did it outside like you guys said, before I tried it on the chips I was after, smoke & burning pcb till I got it figured out, but now it's good to go, works like a charm and fast.

So I went ahead and free'd up that SL4AD I had waiting on a board too.

My clothes stink something nasty from the smoke, but the house didn't burn down, and I have two new chip's to add to the collection...a good day in my books Very Happy

Thanks everyone, would've been some trashed cpu's here without your help.

Awesome end result! I wish I had a torch. Just a wild thought: is there any putty that one can stick to the bottom side of the board to transfer heat to the cpu and stick a piece of sheet metal above the puddy to prevent the flame from burning the board?

Thanks, I was happy with it too!

That seems like a damn good idea, I don't know of any, but I'm gonna do a little research on it, something like that would probably help keep from overheating the cpu and damaging it too when someone applies the flame for too long by accident (like the few test chips I had bubbling from over heating) Cool

I was also wondering if anyone has ever used a short piece of steel tubing and heated it up on the back of a board to try and remove an Intel TT80502 type cpu from a board!!?

Some people desolder all the components by putting the board on a heated metal pan.

Fumes are abundant, but the result is fast and really a kill!
And you get all the mercury and lead in your lungs Wink

I don't recommend that at all.

One way around that would be to set up a large fan, like a living room fan, by the hot plate to blow all the fumes away, and since it's quick, also hold your breath for a few seconds while doing it, and do it outside of course

Unless you have a gas mask Wink

Always take precautions!
