Early Z80 datasheets don't have Z8400 parts, they only have Z80/Z80A I have Z8400/A/B part numbers in Zilog databooks from 1981 to 1985. The databooks don't mention "A", but they do mention fourth letters "B" and "J". Zilog 1989 databook has new part numbers, like Z840004PSC. I don't have databooks for 1979/80 and 86/87/88.

was meaning early Z8400 datasheets.. so will have to look for datasheets from 86 to 88 to see if anything there
the suffix is also used on peripheral zilogs chips so might have to look at datasheets for them
like
Z8030ACEA
Z8440BCEA _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

I quickly checked 1985 databook, and didn't find "A" designation for Z80 supports chips. "B" and "J" letters indicate type of screening, so "A" may also refer to screening.
