While doing some Slot 1 experiments with an Asus P3B-F, I noticed that both my Pentium 2s 233 are for some reason insanely slow...

If I run Windows 7 with a SL2U3 350 @ 233, it works obviously slowly, but pretty fine, booting in a few minutes. If I use an actual Pentium 2 233 MHz SL264/SL2HD, it is insanely slow, still booting after more 40 minutes!

Is there any known bug affecting Steppings C0/C1 that could cause this?
There are many articles about some Math Bug, but I don't really think that it would cause such slow down...
Or is there something specific that has to be set in the Bios for older Pentium 2s?

I don't know any significant differences between Klamath and Deschutes other than the process node.

Do you use more than 512 MB of memory?
Quote:
The combined L2 cache controller / tag RAM chip used together with Klamath chips on PII 233 - 300 MHz used to be the '82459AB'. This chip could only cache up to 512 MB of memory, so that those Pentium II CPUs could not run with more memory than 512 MB. The first Pentium II 333 CPUs came with the '82459AC' L2 cache controller/tag RAM chip, which can run at higher clocks, but it is still only able to cache 512 MB. Later the PII 333 and all faster PII CPUs (350,400,450 MHz) were equipped with the '82459AD', which is not only able to keep up with up to 225 MHz L2 clock speed, but it can finally cache up to 4 GB of memory.

Yes, I used 1 GiB = 4 x 256 MiB

I reduced to 512 MiB and it now works fine, thank you Very Happy !

Learning every day :p
