An earlier topic on P4's reminded me of something interesting that I thought could be a good idea to reduce the heat on a P4 chip...I'll use my usual P4 3.06gb for exemple VS the M P4 1700 or AMD Athlon 1700
...If one were to remove that ridiculous headspreader off of the P4 3.06 , wouldn't help to release that trapped heat from there ?
Cause I know for sure , that headspreader must be keeping some of that heat trapped under there...
With the removal of the heatspreader, I'm sure you'd see a significant difference in temps, knocking it down by 5'C to 10'C...this would be a BIG thing for the ES one because the overclocking ability is allready fanominal, imagine knocking down the heat a little more !!!
In the pictures we see the P4 3.06 and the AMD 1700. There's a big difference with heat dissapation here...I think

Does anyone have any pictures of a P4 with the metal cap off?
JD, that metal cap conducts heat pretty well I dont think anything gets trapped.
How many crushed P4 cores have you heard of? - none I bet.
How many crushed cores do you get with the AMD? - plenty. |

-------> I do think heat gets trapped ! That cap is like an greenhouse ! There's space between the core and the cap that gets filled with heat !

-----> crushed, no...Scortch, yes !

----->Crushed yes, for the individual who excersies to much feakin' pressure on them, and don't know how to place a cooler on properly

Wow ! That was very interesting, and I got your answer !!!
Thank you very much for going 3/4 of the way for me
The answer to the rest of the removal would be to do this:
------> #1 After the first removal of the surrounding soulder, carefull pry up the cap so that it doesn't fall back on to the soulder again.
------>#2 Take a tool , like the rotozip. Cut around ,as close to the core as possible ! Leaving only the remaining cap, around the core to be removed...BUT WAIT !!!!........
------>#3 ... this is the kicker ! Leave the remaining cap over the core !!! It will replicate a "AMD" type core, without running into the risk of destroying it
This should work nicely and definatly improve heat control for overclocking .sooooooooo happy !!!
