My current processor is a Socket A(462 Pin) on a K7S5A Motherboard(AMD Athlon K7) with a speed of 1.1ghz.( Ithink thats all the info). Basically i would like to know how powerfull i can upgrade it, and can i use an athlon 64? As you can tell i quite green at this so any info would be greatfully appreciated.

You cannot use Athlon 64 in this motherboard. The fastest processor you can upgrade to is Athlon XP 2600+ with 266 MHz FSB:

Athlon XP 2600+ may be very expensive, so you may consider upgrading to slower Athlon XP 2400+.

I have an HP Pavilion a714x. It had an AMD Athlon XP 3100+ (Thorton?). I would like to put in a cheap chip to see if the board is still good. Would an AMD Athlon 2500+ (Barton) work? Thnkns.
