I recently bought a P4 3.4 northwood (SL793), thinking it would run faster than my present chip 3.2E SL7PN. after running benchmarks, the SL793 shows just slightly slower. which chip do you recommend as the best one to keep? they are both socket 478. thanks!

I left this out of my first post. I am not interested in overclocking, as I have an Intel D875PBZ motherboard which cannot be overclocked.

As for me I would keep the northwood, you will sell it better when you 'll replace it, because it is the highest frequency for socket 478, and because northwood have better reputation.

Btw it is strange that the prescott runs faster. I think it could highly depend on the test.

Northwood also has lower thermal design power.

in 3DMark06, these are the scores:

SL793 SL7PN

SM2.0 838 840
HDR/SM3.0 974 978
CPU 741 975

The 3.2E has a much stronger CPU score in this benchmark. is this a proper indicator of CPU strength?

sorry, it didn't format the way I hoped. This should look better:

SL793 (3.4 northwood)
SM2.0 838
HDR/SM3.0 974
CPU 741

SL7PN (3.2E Prescott)
SM2.0 840
HDR/SM3.0 978
CPU 975

Did you try to run Sandra tests on these processors?

SiSoft Sandra05 Scores for the 3.4 Northwood (SL793) are as follows:

Arithmetic:

Dhrystone - 10253
Whetstone - 7504

Multi-Media:

Integer - 26074
Floating Point - 36826

I have not tested the 3.2E (SL7PN) as it is not in my system.

So we can't compare directly. I would prefer CPU with slower clock - Prescott. As I good remember Prescott have better OC and you can always have chance to turn up speed of your CPU.

Difference is viewable. I think chipset, RAM have no metter on result in SiSoft Sandra CPU tests so P4 Northwood is "faster in these tests".

Allthough I'm not a fan of Intel...

I would scrap that and go with a Pentium D
