Hi guys! I own an MSI KT4AV(6712) mobo with an Athlon XP 2400+.
I found an Athlon Xp 2800+ (according to MSI site my mobo supports this one) but when I try to turn on the PC after a couple of seconds it shuts down and goes beeping unstoppable!
Now I put back the 2400+ into the mobo but it doesn't turn on!!! It goes beeping again!!! Fried mobo maybe?
I tryied cmos reset but nothing changes...
Any help please???

Of course! If I put the cpu in wrong place the socket wouldn't lock right?
I changed everything! Vga, Ram even the cooler but nothing changes...
My Msi doesn't want to cooperate with 2800+
Althought I manage to install my 2400+ again but MSI sees it like 1800+...I 'll play a little with the fsb...
I am going crazy...

1) be careful! AMD socketA is very fragile.
2) Please describe the beeping. monotonic?
3) clear cmos
4) turn off - turn on memory and video.

About the bios I have MSI live update and it doesn't give me any update...

If MSI live update doesn't give you any update. Probably you have last bios version 5.4 2004-11-02.

Looks like you have the date set a month ahead in your BIOS Smile

Have you tried removing and reseating any add-on cards? Sometimes, if a card is seated wrong, this will give errors (but wouldn't explain why it boots at all with the original processor).

When it is beeping, which lights on the back panel (4 lights in a square, numbered 1 to 4) remain lit?

Have you tried clearing the CMOS settings to their default? If clearing or resetting through the BIOS doesn't fix anything, try shorting jumper JBAT1 (the jumper is at the back-panel end of PCI slots 4 and 5. Short it with a jumper or piece of wire, and then turn the PC on, leave a short moment and turn off again). This sometimes help, if something got set wrong in the BIOS.

Also, I assume you used the BIOS setup to try and set the processor speed? The 2400+ has a bus speed of 133 MHz. If this has been reset to the hardware default of 100MHz, the speed would be reduced from 2000 MHz to 1500 MHz, which is close to what it would be for an 1800+. This implies to me that the BIOS reset the FSB (or something you did reset it) to the hardware default at some point.

The FSB must, according to the manual, be adjusted using the BIOS.

One final question...

What is the exact part number of the 2800+ CPU? This can sometimes make a difference (different core or FSB...). Some 2800+ have a 133 MHz FSB, others have 166MHz. Some might not work correctly if the wrong FSB speed is used (too fast or too slow, although I would guess that underclocking would be far less of a problem...).

More information on the different XP models, if it helps you, can be found at:

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K7/TYPE-Athlon%20XP.html

Genna gives more info than I can try to explain, and ffor the 2800+ he shows 3 different part numbers...

Yes, I mean thermal paste.
Any is good if you are not an overclocker.

Some mobos alarm if you forget to connect cooler jack

The only add on card is my msi nvidia FX5900XT which I removed it and then put it back(also tried an Nvidia MX440)! I even removed the ram chips...I also have another set of 2 twinmos 256 MB (pc 3200).Replaced my twinmos set of 2x512Mb(pc3200) but no changes...
I even took out the battery from the board but no changes...I can't get it!
Now my 2400+ works at 1500MHz which is as 1800+
Checking the FSB is at 100 Mhz...Tune up to 133Mhz(standar fsb for 2400+) the pc doesn't boot at all!(My monitor stays in standby mode).
And the 2800+ is a Barton one with 166MHz FSB(If I am not wrong)!
