Hello All -I'm new to the topic of replacing / upgrading a CPU and I'm looking for some help in making the right choice.

Below are some of the details of what I'm working with, but I'm sure I've left out key details. If I need to supply a missing detail I'll need some help on how to find that/those details.

Thank you for sharing your time and talent.

TOSHIBA LAPTOP Satellite L655-S510
Model PSK2CU-01YO1U

CPU
Intel Pentium P6100 @ 2.00GHz 53 °C
Arrandale 32nm Technology

Motherboard
Manufacturer Intel Corp.
Model Base Board Product Name (CPU)
Version Base Board Version
Chipset Vendor Intel
Chipset Model Havendale/Clarkdale Host Bridge
Chipset Revision 02
Southbridge Vendor Intel
Southbridge Model HM55
Southbridge Revision 05
BIOS
Brand INSYDE
Version 2.80
Date 7/3/2012

In case it matters, I am also planning on (but have not yet bought) upgraded RAM and SSD.

I have a very similar laptop. Best CPU is a Core i7-640M, any socket G1 (uPGA-988A) dual core CPU will work (Not i7-7XX, i7-8XX, i7-9XX)

Something to note on this platform, 16 GB of RAM (2x8GB) doesn't work, it will load BIOS but will bluescreen booting the OS. Seems to be a memory controller limitation.

This is your Satellite L655's BIOS microcode dump:

CPUID=106E0 Rev=FFFF001F 2008/12/15 CRC=6208AF28 Off=407800 Size=2C00 Plat=0,1,4

Your Satellite L655's BIOS has the necessary microcode needed for a Clarksfield (first generation mobile Core i7) to work, but I don't know if the APIC table supports it.

Download Read & Write Everything v1.7 from this website, then run it and click on the 'ACPI' icon on the top portion of the screen. You should see a window popping up that shows a couple of tabs with differing names, but the tab that you should be looking for is the APIC tab. Click on the APIC tab and look for an entry called 'Processor Local APIC Structure'.

For a 720QM, 740QM, 820QM, 840QM, 920XM, and the 940XM to work properly without having 4 missing threads, it must have at least 8 entries of the 'Processor Local APIC structure' showing up in the APIC table (8 entries = 4 cores / 8 threads). An easier way to find this out is to check the highest 'ACPI Processor ID' number. If it shows up to 4 entries (4 threads supported), which should be seen as 'ACPI Processor ID 0x03', you can't upgrade to any of these Clarksfield processors. However, if it shows up to 8 entries (8 threads supported) which should be seen as 'ACPI Processor ID 0x07', you can but it is not guaranteed.

An additional bonus with a Clarksfield processor, is support for 8 GiB DDR3 SO-DIMMs. This is unlike the Arrandale processors (which are dual-cores such as the P4600, P6300, 390M, 580M, 640M) which do not support 8 GiB DDR3 SO-DIMMs and will trigger a kernel panic in Linux or a BSoD in Windows if it attempts to read memory addresses located above 4 GiB on a 8 GiB DDR3 SO-DIMM.

If you do not have 8 entries in your BIOS' APIC table, I would suggest a 640M as svmlegacy has stated it to be the fastest dual-core CPU for this socket.

An additional note: Clarksfield processors (Quad Core) require a dedicated GPU - They do not have any form of internal graphics.

To all:
I have a typo in my original post. I listed the part number for the SSD twice. Here is the missing part number for the RAM I am thinking of upgrading to:

CT2KIT51264BF160B

Have I selected the correct RAM for these CPU choices? Should I be considering a different choice?

Thank you for your reply.

When replacing the CPU will I need to make other changes to the Laptop, for example, BIOS settings, other software/hardware changes, or is this just a pull out/put in hardware replacement?

In terms of the Clarksfield (940XM) how can I tell if I have or need to add/upgrade the GPU?

In terms of costs and performance, it looks like the 940XM costs about $499 and the Core i7-640M cost about $189. Would the performance difference be worth the extra money?

Overheating?
I've read some reviews of the 940XM where users report their laptop's cooling fan running at high speed much of the time after they upgraded to it. Am I risking overheating the Laptop if I upgrade to any of these faster CPUs?

Thank you for your reply.

If I'm reading this correctly, I think it looks like it has 8.

The Read & Write Everything v1.7 ACPI tab shows these results:

Sorry to butt-in, but I'd like to share my thoughts on this.

There is no model of Satellite L655-S510 with a dedicated GPU. This means your best option for clock speed is the i7-640M. Your system will not support the quad-cores, as there is no practical way of upgrading the GPU* and the mainboard might lack the power delivery components needed for the quad-core chips.

*unless you REALLY want to run a mini-pcie to full pcie x16 adapter ribbon monstrosity with an external power supply

Also, the prices you mentioned seem very high to me. Are those prices in USD? (assuming you are in US/Canada) i7-640M's can be had for ~$40 USD on eBay. Amazon sellers tend to gouge prices heavily on older parts (seems there isn't as much competition on Amazon?), so you should stick to eBay (or otherwise) for these older CPUs.

Also if you are fine with throwing $189-$500 at the problem, it may be time to consider picking up a nice used laptop. ~$500 can get you a used Dell Precision / HP ZBook workstation laptop on eBay with a quad-core i7, dedicated GPU, and probably an SSD. ~$200 can get something without a GPU but still much faster than your current machine.

The RAM you selected looks very similar to my upgrade, and as far as I can tell, should work. Upgrading to the i7-640M (Which I would reccomend) is a CPU replacement only. If you run Windows, make sure to reboot after the initial boot of the OS on the new CPU, to allow for windows to adjust itself.

I bought mine just a few months ago for ~ 50 CAD, on eBay.

My laptop is a Satellite C650 series, for reference.

Thank you for the insights on price and choices. Very helpful on the ebay vs Amazon prices.

To svmlegacy
An extra thank you for the detailed information.

Wish me luck.
