Hi everyone,

I'm trying to upgrade my laptop, an IBM Thinkpad T30, which motherboard mounts:

Quote:
Northbridge Intel i845D rev. 04
Southbridge Intel 82801CAM (ICH3-M) rev. 02

and at the moment a cpu:

Quote:
Specification Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 - M CPU 1.80GHz
Package Socket 478 mPGA (platform ID = 3h)
(it should be this one:
http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL6V7.html)

I've bought another cpu 2.40ghz, and only after purchasing it I noticed it's mobile p4 and not mobile p4-M, so the newer model running at 533Mhz:

Quote:
Processor type Intel Mobile Pentium 4
Part number RK80532GE056512
Package type 478-pin FC-PGA2
Processor speed (GHz) 2.40/1.60
Bus speed (MHz) 533

(S-SPEC: SL723, see at
http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL723.html)

(actually, I've seen that the natural upgrade of my processor to a 2,4GHz one would be the SL6VC, that is a Mobile P4-M)

I wonder if I can mount this processor on my system, considering that the socket should be fully compatible with it. The doubt is the bus speed. I have read that the chipset i845D was designed for 400mhz and only the latter i845E introduced support for 533mhz.

My question is, would this cpu work on that motherboard? would it be necessary maybe a underclock of the cpu to a bus freq of 400mhz (sorry if I'm saying a stupid thing, but I've got no experience with over/underclocking)?
Or shouldn't I even try to mount it because it won't ever work?

Please answer as soon as possible, according with your experience and competence. I need to try it in this days in order to give it back to the seller if it's not "my" model.

Thanks in advance to all.

ps.: a description of the i845D chipset: http://www.digit-life.com/articles/intel845ddr/index.html

Are you sure it will fit in the socket. My laptop only takes
Pentium M and Celeron M as the pins are different than
Pentium mobile chips in the bottom left corner.

It may work in your laptop, but it will run underclocked: 2.4 * (100/133) = 1.8 GHz, that is at the same speed as your current processor. I wouldn't even bother with trying to run it. There may be also a problem with fitting your heatsink on this CPU because Mobile Pentium 4 has a heatspreader, and Pentium 4-M doesn't.

Jonh - Mobile Pentium 4 works in the same socket as Pentium 4-M.
